Thanks for visiting our blog! Today, we meditate upon self-control, which is a fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22, 23 NKJV)Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls. (Proverbs 25:28 NKJV) If a person has NO self-imposed limits, he’s out of control! Like a city without walls, it makes one an easy target for the enemy.
For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God . . . (2 Tim. 3:2-4 NKJV) Evil will flourish in and fully corrupt a person who lacks self-control as revealed by the Scripture shown above.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. (2 Pet. 1:5-7 NKJV)
This passage in 2 Peter teaches us the methodical, steadfast way in which the Holy Spirit will mature us and develop our character. We must begin our walk with the Lord with faith, followed by virtue and knowledge, and then self-control. Self-control is a key ingredient in this progression of spiritual development. And all of these things occur as we diligently study the Bible, obey the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and flow in the grace that the Lord provides to us moment by moment.
Diligently pursue living with all of the fruit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and you will achieve God’s plan for you!
